What is Doctor Shopping: A patient goes from doctor to doctor obtaining the same drug prescription within an overlapping time period. The patient uses the same reasoning or excuses to obtain prescriptions and fails to inform each doctor that they saw another doctor.

Recent studies have revealed that the abuse of prescription drugs is about to exceed the use of illicit street narcotics worldwide. This abuse has created a new illegal industry of counterfeit painkillers and other medicines that without the same quality controls existing in legitimate manufacturing, the dosage and composition are potent enough to kill.

In the U.S. alone, the abuse of painkillers, stimulants, tranquilizers, and other prescription medications has exceeded nearly all illicit drugs except for marijuana.

Joint Partnerships: The Richmond, Indiana Police Department is working with other area law enforcement agencies, pharmacies, doctors, health care facilities, and pharmaceutical manufacturers to “TEAM UP”. This partnership is just the beginning of open communications, education, and cooperation to cut into this growing problem.
